Visual Bible Study

Last winter I took a Visual Bible Study workshop with Debby Topliff (http://debbytopliff.com) which turned the direction of my art back to biblical inspiration.

Debby has a passion to make the Bible come alive. She believes that when you slow down and sketch what you read, you notice details and patterns that facilitate God's Word taking root in your heart and being imprinted on your mind.

I have returned to my study of the parables along with other Bible passages.

This is a preliminary sketch of the parable of "The Sower, the Seed and the Soil" (colored pencil on black paper). Mark 4:1-20
And this is my second version (paint, thread and beads on fabric mounted on wood) The picture of the sower sowing the Word of God is in the center under a glass cabochon. The blue ring represents the seed (the Word) that is snatched up by the birds before it can take root in the heart. The next ring represents the rocky ground where it perishes and cannot take root due to troubles and persecution. Then next row represents the thorns (the cares of the world) which choke the plants so that they do not bear grain. The outer ring shows the good soil where the seed grew and produced a crop, that is a life that is growing in the Lord.

MADONNA OF THE SEA

It's been over a year since my last posting. I spent most of last year making jewelry, repeating designs that were selling well. I also completed this bead embroidery which I will enter in the needlework division of this years' Sanibel Shell show.

Something New

mixed metal necklaces

I haven't posted new work in months because I have not created anything new. Oh, I have been busy in the studio; jewelry sales have been excellent, but I am repeating designs to replenish gallery inventory. I have had a request from one gallery for these mixed metal necklaces.

I hope to get back to beadwork soon.

I am back in the studio and working on several projects, including continuing with the shell jewelry that I began in Florida and 6 necklaces for Jack Straw Gallery to be ready for "The Season". I have begun a new Madonna and Child beaded icon and am taking up the drawing challege - making one drawing every morning before I begin my other work.

Sanibel Shell Show

The 2012, 75th annual Sanibel Shell Show ran from March 1-3. I have somewhat reliable word that the show will be featured as a segment on the CBS Sunday Morning News on March 18 (9-10:30 EST).

This is my entry in the jewelry division of the show.

Two necklaces featuring turban shells as the focal shell. Also including beehive snail shells, pearls, spiny oyster, amber, carnelian, agate, sequins and glass beads.

CIVA Network

I now have a page on the CIVA Network.
Check it out at http://civa-artists.ning.com/profile/NancyGoes

I still have not completed any new work and I'm not sure when I'll get back in the studio. After the first of the year we'll be heading to sunny Florida for 3 months. I'm hoping that the warm weather will get those creative juices flowing again.

Advent

"The Mystery"
mixed media collage
I haven't made any new art for several months as I have been working on Christmas gifts and cards. However I did have an older piece framed recently. It seemed appropriate to the season so I thought I would share it.

6 weeks

It's been 6 weeks to the day since my knee surgery. All went well and I am healing but still have a little way to go. I was hoping my recovery period would give me a lot of time to make new work, but the creative juices just don't seem to be flowing yet. I will be sending this older piece to the Doane College exhibition.

Time Off

This will be the last posting for a month or so. I am having knee replacement surgery on Sept. 6. While I'm rehabbing I will be working on one more icon for inclusion in an exhibition at Doane College in NE in Nov.

I have lots of ideas for the "frames" but probably won't get to them until next spring as a bunch of other projects take priority over the winter.

They're Off!

YEA! Today I shipped my work to the University of Dayton for my solo exhibition that runs from Sept. 6 to Nov. 11, 2011. After the show opens you can read about it online at http://campus.udaytonedu./mary/gallery.html and click on current exhibit.
I've been working toward this show for many years and it feels good to have come to completion.

Without the icons my studio walls were very bare so I have hung these frames that I bought in Santa Fe, NM years ago. I am waiting for the Spirit's inspiration. This is the first time that I will have started with the frame.
